On Dec. 4, 33 Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows and College Park Scholars traveled from the University of Maryland, College Park to the Francis King Carey School of Law to engage in a substantive discussion about mass violence and youth violence in American culture.
Discussion of Youth and Mass Violence Accompanied by Nina Harris, EdD, MA, and program coordinator James Stilwell, the students were led in an active discussion by Carey Law Professor Michael Pinard, JD, director of the clinical law program at the law school. The fellows have been studying youth violence this semester as part of their program seminar.
The Roots of Violence In a lively exchange, Pinard pressed them to consider the multitude of reasons that underpin the violence seen in the culture. The students responded with a wide variety of causes, including poverty, failing schools, and fear.
Lisa Rawlings Welcomes Students Lisa Rawlings, associate director of community engagement at UMB and sister of Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, welcomed the students.
Rawlings is the daughter of Delegate Howard “Pete” Rawlings for whom the Rawlings Fellows Program at College Park is named.
She encouraged them to pursue their interest in social justice and leadership as they move through their years at College Park and beyond.
Law School Admissions Michele Hayes, director of admissions and student recruiting at UM Carey Law, gave the students a brief overview of the law school admissions process as well.
Paula Monopoli, JD, whose work on leadership with Harris gave rise to the collaborative event, said, “The Rawlings Fellows and the College Park Scholars are the best and the brightest College Park has to offer. We at the law school are pleased to have them engage with our faculty on substantive policy issues and to learn what we at Carey Law are all about.”
